The Institute of Carpenters has been established since 1890, founded by eleven craftsmen who were top achievers in the exams set by The Worshipful Company of Carpenters. The driving force of the IOC was initially to protect dying skills of traditional craftsmanship in the face of the industrial revolution. They set out to ensure that woodworkers were fully trained in both traditional wood craft and in the management and operation of the new machinery.

The Institute of Carpenters.jpgToday the IOC still abides by these original aims, as well as striving to assist carpenters and joiners in every aspect involving the materials, machinery, and legislation associated with the job. As well bringing great advantages to its trade members, the IOC welcomes affiliated members from the timber trade, teaching, and any other similar industries that would benefit from the shared knowledge.

Although the IOC exists to serve the needs of the carpentry and joinery industries, it also helps to combat the rise of cowboy tradesmen to put the public at ease. If you are looking for a carpenter or joiner, by choosing a member of the IOC you can rest assured that they will have gone through a careful selection process, ensuring that they have sufficient training and experience. Moreover, you will know that you will both have access to a huge network of information and support in the unlikely event that anything goes wrong. The IOC protects the interests of both the tradesmen and the consumer to promote the principles of fine craftsmanship and honest trade.

Training Opportunities

The IOC is not an old boys' network of long standing carpenters and joiners, it encourages female membership and is open to all students studying the many facets of the carpentry and joinery industry.

Following the reduction of vocational options in schools, the IOC set up a non-GCSE vocational craft course to be operated in secondary education. It operates alongside other training organisations in support of the new GNVQ for construction industry qualifications for students 16 plus, and works co-operatively with trading standard authorities, training and technical research bodies including:
